Tesla, the world's 5 millionth vehicle, rolled off the production line in Shanghai!
On September 17, Tesla's official micro announced that Tesla's 5 millionth vehicle in the world officially rolled off the production line at Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory.
It is reported that Tesla's world's first 1 million complete vehicle rolled off the production line, which took a full 12 years; It took 18 months for the second 1 million vehicle to roll off the production line; It took 11 months for the third 1 million vehicle to roll off the production line; It took 7 months for the fourth 1 million vehicle to roll off the production line; The fifth 1 million vehicle rolled off the production line in just six months.

Behind the "Tesla speed", it is also inseparable from the blessing of "China speed". Just 11 days ago, on September 6, Tesla's 2 millionth vehicle at the Shanghai Gigafactory officially rolled off the production line. From 0 to 1 million vehicles, Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory took 33 months, and from 1 million to 2 million vehicles, it took only 13 months.
Shanghai Gigafactory supports "Tesla speed"
In January 2019, Tesla broke ground on the Shanghai Gigafactory, and in November of the same year, the factory was put into trial production, and on December 30 of the same year, the first Model 3 deliveries were completed. This speed of "starting construction in the same year, putting into production in the same year, and delivering in the same year" is still a legend in the automotive industry.
On September 6, Tesla's 2 millionth vehicle in Shanghai Gigafactory rolled off the production line, which means that from the beginning of building the first car, the factory has built the 2 millionth car in less than 4 years, becoming the most efficient super factory in Tesla's history.
It is reported that the automation rate of the Shanghai super factory has reached 95%, and with the help of automated production lines, the traditional production line work that was previously completed by thousands of people can now be completed by only dozens of people. In terms of space layout, Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory adopts a linear and double-storey factory design, and the transportation of body parts in the factory not only has horizontal movement, but also vertical and vertical transportation, which greatly improves the space utilization rate.
The combination of various advantages makes Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory now take a complete vehicle off the production line in less than 40 seconds, and the efficiency is rare in the world. Thanks to the efficient manufacturing of cars, the Shanghai Gigafactory has become the "C position" of Tesla's global exports, supporting half of Tesla's production.
"Bit Twins" open up all-round competition
On August 9, BYD's 5,000,000th new energy vehicle officially rolled off the production line, becoming the first automobile brand in the world to reach the milestone of the 5 millionth new energy vehicle rolling off the production line. Today, Tesla's 5 millionth vehicle in the world has officially rolled off the production line. This also means that the sales battle between the two sides has entered the next stage, and it is still unknown who can be the first to achieve 10 million sales.
In addition to production and sales, BYD and Tesla have also begun to "crack their wrists" in terms of profit margins. BYD's 2023 half-year report shows that in the first half of this year, the company achieved revenue of 260.124 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 72.72%, and a net profit of 10.954 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 204.68%, and both revenue and net profit hit a record high. Among them, BYD's gross profit margin in the second quarter reached 18.7%, which has surpassed Tesla, which was 18.2%.
From the overall performance, Tesla is still leading significantly, but its net profit has declined slightly. In the first half of 2023, Tesla achieved revenue of US$48.256 billion (approximately RMB 352.5 billion), a year-on-year increase of 35%, and a net profit of US$5.216 billion (approximately RMB 38.1 billion), down 6.5% year-on-year.
The all-round competition between Tesla and BYD has begun, and behind this is also the fierce competition of the entire new energy automobile industry. Deng Chenghao, CEO of Deep Blue Automobile, said in an interview with the media that the automotive industry will be very "rolled" in the next 3 to 5 years, and the battle between fuel vehicles and new energy vehicles, independent brands and joint venture brands, and traditional car companies and new forces will last for 3-5 years.
